Char Dham or four seats are the four places which the Hindus consider to be sacred. These are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The Hindus in India believe that the tour (yatra) of these four will wash away all sins and help to attain ‘Moksha’. This is mainly a religious tour giving insight into Hindu religion and culture since ancient times. It also offers excellent opportunity for site seeing, being situated in Garhwal Himalayas with views of the snow capped mountains, green valleys, gushing hot springs and rippling rivers.

Early morning start from New Delhi for Rishikesh by road. Rishikesh is situated in the foothills of Himalayas and is popularly called Gateway to Garhwal Himalayas in North India. Rishikesh is one of the popular pilgrimage centres in India and is a home to centres of Hindu religious thoughts and spirituality. Check into a hotel after arriving in Rishikesh. Once you are settled, step out to see the famous bridge of Laxman Jhoola. It is a hanging bridge over the River Ganga at the height of 70 feet with 450 feet length. It is a famous tourist spot because of its ancient origin, grand temples around it and the colourful local markets. The town of Rishikesh is always crowded with pilgrims from far and wide, many sitting on the banks of the holy Ganga enjoying the spiritual journey.
Early morning start off for Hanumanchatti by road. Once you reach you will check into a lodge or rest house, depending on the availability.
Yamunotri trek is the most interesting part of the tour, though it’s a bit difficult as there is no motorable road to the destination and you will have to access it by foot (14Km) from Hanumanchatti. Yamunotri is the source of River Yamuna located near Bandarpunch Mountain which is 6,315m high. The actual source is at 4421m and trek to this part is extremely difficult so pilgrims usually pay their respect in the Yamunotri temple located at a more accessible place. The temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in late 19th century. It was rebuilt later as it was destroyed. A heavy blanket of snow covers this area during the winter months. The view is simply magnificent with a panorama of mountains on all sides, many rivers, large and small, deep forests, waterfalls and villages amongst them. Another attraction here is hot water springs situated near the temple. Return back to Hanumanchatti for the night.
The next Dham in our itinerary is Gangotri. You will start early morning driving towards Uttarkashi, the main stopover for Gangotri. The Holy town of Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of River Bhagirathi at a height of 1,158 metres. You will check into a tourist bungalow or rest house after arriving in Uttarkashi.
You will start your journey towards Gangotri in the morning. It would be another 4/5 hours journey. Gangotri is a small town at the bank of river Bhagirathi. Historically this place is believed to be the most sacred spot. It is in the Greater Himalayas at the height of 3,100m. According to Hindu mythology it is here that Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors.
Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga situated at the height of 3,048 metres. It was built by General Amar singh Thapa in the early 18th century. It is a scenic spot with snow clad peaks all round with a rugged terrain and gushing water of the river Bhagirathi. If you move 18Km upward you would come to the source of Ganga river, Gaumukh Glacier. The distance has to be covered by foot. There is a submerged Shivling here which can be seen in pre winter season when the water level goes down. After visiting the glacier drive back to Uttarkashi for the overnight stay at the hotel.
Get up early morning and start the journey towards Kedarnath. The drive itself will be enjoyable as the surroundings are beautiful along the river Bhagirathi. You will drive to Rudraprayag which is the place where river Mandakini and Alakananda meet. This place is named after Lord Shiva and is a place where Narad Muni worshipped Lord Shiva. There are Shiva and Jagadamba Temple here. This area is beautiful with lakes and glaciers
On this day you will take an early morning trip to the confluence. The sight of the confluence is beautiful and you will find it easy to distinguish the two rivers by the colour of their water and their exact meeting point. Further drive along the Mandakini River will bring you to Gaurikund. This is the point till which you can travel by car. After this you will have to trek to Kedarnath. So Gaurikund is considered to be the base camp for Kedarnath. There is hot sulphur springs here where pilgrims bathe. You can take a dip in the springs if you wish to.
After the dip in Gaurikund start your journey towards Kedarnath on foot. The distance of 14Km can be covered by either foot or ponies. Kedarnath is one of the most holy places of Hindu religion. The temples of Kedarnath which are dedicated to Lord Shiva dwell among the majestic snow capped peaks of Himalayas. Here you will see one of the twelve ‘Jyotirling’ of Kedar or Lord Shiva. It is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya and existed even during Mahabharata. Stay overnight in Kedarnath.
Start from Kedarnath early in the morning towards Gaurikund along the River Alakananda once again to reach Joshimath. It is a popular hill station and a pilgrimage centre. Joshimath is situated at the height of 1,890m in the state of Uttarakhand. The scenic beauty of this area is unparallel with spectacular view of the peaks of Nanda Devi and Nilkanth during sunrise and sunset. It is a base for many Himalayan expeditions, trekking trails and pilgrimage centre. Come back for overnight stay at the hotel.
Start the day by driving towards the next destination, Badrinath. It is one pf the holiest places for people of Hindu religion. The place gets its name from the holy temple of Badrinath. It is situated on the banks of the River Alaknanda at a height of 3,100m in Garhwal Himalayas. It was established as a pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in 9th century. The main attraction here is the 50 feet tall Badrinath temple. The small cupola at the top of the temple is covered with gold gilt. The black stone idol inside was discovered by Shankara and enshrined in a cave near Tapt Kund. Later it was shifted to its present abode by King of Garhwal in 16th century. After visiting the temple return back to Joshimath. Stay overnight here.
Early this morning drive back to Rishikesh. Upon reaching check into a hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Stay overnight in Rishikesh.
